The first in a series of prints exploring the enchanting landscape surrounding the Mawddach (pro-nounced ‘mao-thack’) Estuary in North Wales. ‘Low Tide, Mawddach’ is an 18 layer reduction and multiblock linocut which I have carved by hand, custom mixed every ink colour for, and hand printed on my Vandercook proofing press in Suffolk. These prints have grown out of my time at the Mawddach artist residency which I attended in summer 2024, spending two weeks in Mawddach exploring with my sketchbook and camera. I am developing those location sketches, memories and reference photographs into linocuts which seek to evoke the quiet magic of Mawddach for everyone whether you have been able to visit or not quite yet. ‘Low Tide, Mawddach’ is based on the view directly out from the residency house windows across the estuary, where your eyes naturally land on ‘shark fin rock’ and the beautiful textures of the gently moving water before roaming around the layers of mountains behind.
